The Good Time Ratio (GTR) Metric

Making life fulfilling is the core driver of human behavior throughout history. The Good Time Ratio (GTR) measures how successful our efforts are in achieving this goal by capturing the proportion of Good Times (attractive moments) relative to unattractive moments over time. By making experienced life quality measurable, GTR reveals patterns in human development that traditional success indicators often miss and provides a clearer reference point for improving life than narrow indicators like wealth, GDP, or revenue.
The Idea & Research
GTR was developed through field research and a rigorous Ph.D. process in collaboration with Shanghai University. It combined real-world testing with cross-cultural evaluation across different life situations. The development took place across three phases of qualitative interviews, observations, and quantitative assessment spanning more than 25 countries. In phase one, the common human pursuit of maximizing Good Times throughout life was identified and examined through qualitative interviews alongside perspectives from psychology, sociology, behavioral science, and other existing research fields (see: The Science of Good Times). In phase two, five fundamental life areas were distilled from recurring patterns across lived experience, forming the foundation of the measurable framework. In phase three, participants first estimated their Ratio of Good Times intuitively before completing structured GTR assessments based on the findings of phases one and two. Across contexts, measured results aligned more consistently with lived experience while also revealing clearer insights into what influenced it than memory-based estimation alone.
